Blatz Is The “Star” Of A Christmas Story Christmas

With any great Christmas movie, it comes with some of your standard bar scenes, including the typical 10 year old bartender, breaking and entering to “borrow” some great classic beer decorations and …. errrr wait, what?

So last year’s Christmas time post here was featuring Schlitz as the Christmas movie beer spotting in “It’s a Wonderful Life” (if you missed my post, go back a year to check it out) This year Ralphie from the beloved “A Christmas Story” goes back …or to the 1970’s for some classic beer spottings.!

The setting is at Flick’s Tavern, which is decorated to the perfect essence of what anyone would think a midwest bar from 1970’s would look like. Outside features the standard glowing Budweiser sign, which you would think would be it but the producers of this movie dug deeper to include some 1970’s winners.

As Ralphie walks into the bar there is a triangle lighted Blatz sign on the wall which makes multiple appearances throughout the bar scenes. Another awesome piece was the Schlitz sconce which was hanging at the end of the bar and also made multiple appearances, that baby was a beauty! But the one that got me the most excited was to see a lighted square Andeker sign on the back wall which had moment in the sun a couple times too.

In various scenes we also get to see a classic Old Milwaukee cardboard case sitting on the bar and also in the back hallway towards the end of the movie when Ralphie is breaking in at night.

But we will now move onto the “star” of the show and that is Blatz!

Yes Blatz takes center stage in a Christmas Story Christmas with not only coasters on the bar and a tap handle but also as the main item featured in the movie, which is a star on top of Flick’s Tavern in house Christmas tree.

It’s great they chose to feature this beer the most in the movie because you just don’t hear much about Blatz beer anymore. It is still being produced today but its harder to find unlike other classic old man beers like Old Milwaukee, Pabst and etc.

So if you liked the first Christmas Story movie and are into old beer collectibles, I’d suggest watching this movie!

Oh about the movie itself, I give it a b+. It has fun throwbacks to the first movie and has the original actors we all know and love (except for Melinda Dillon (Raplhie’s mom) who has retired from acting and Darren McGavin (The Old Man) who has sadly passed away). I’ve seen some people giving it lower ratings because I’m sure they came into this expecting it was supposed to be exactly like the first one but this movie has a nice continuation of what the characters are up to years later and that’s what makes it fun.

You’ll laugh, you’'ll cry, you’ll crack open a beer and wish it was the 1970’s again……if you were alive back then anyways haha.

PS The movie is currently only available on HBO Max at the time being.
