The Commodore to Reopen the Art Deco Bar?

Original Post Date - September 2015

Grab your zoot suits and tommy guns, the bar at the legendary Commodore Hotel is planned to reopen as a Jazz and Blues Club. The lounge is being renovated with the original design in mind and will feature “art decor” throughout the new sections. Plans have been underway to make the former St Paul hot spot, hot once again.

The original building was built in 1920 and throughout the years it housed some very popular tenants such as Sinclair Lewis along with St Paul’s very popular couple, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. A few other notables that “stayed the night” were Ma and Fred Barker, John Dillinger and rumors of Al Capone, and of course some of his cronies that came along. Also on a side note, the Hamm and Bremer kidnappings were also planned here.

After 1978, the building became condos and has pretty much kept it’s original look. Early advertisements for the building read as “A high class residential service that features, among other things, the homelike spirit and a location in the most aristocratic and quiet section of the city.”

Nevertheless, the bar has maintained its pre-prohibition look and feel and will be a cool place to have a drink. Possibly even sit where Capone sat and plot out a heist.

I wonder if they will have Hamm’s on tap?
